Rome began around the 500’s BCE and lasted for about 1000 years. Rome was founded by a man named Romulus who conquered the land and named it Rome. Rome is located in the western part of the Italian Peninsula along the Tiber River. For a long time Rome was constantly involved in wars but eventually, Rome became the world’s greatest empire.
Rome’s rival Carthage who they fought in the Punic Wars which was Rome’s first major war had a large trading empire in the western Mediterranean. Roman history was characterized by civil wars as many individuals competed for power.”2 Julius Caesar, Pompey, Crassus were three very powerful men who won these civil wars and were able to take over the government and achieve their basic aims. “In 60 B.C., Caesar joined with Crassus and Pompey to form the First Triumvirate.”3 A triumvirate is a unique form of government in which three people have the same power. In this triumvirate, Julius Caesar was given a special military command in Gaul which is modern day France were he was recognized as an accomplished military leader. When Crassus who was a member of the first triumvirate died, the Senate appointed Pompey as the sole leader of Rome and wanted Caesar to lay down his command. Caesar did not like this so he took his army that he formed in Gaul and waged a civil war against Pompey’s forces. Caesar was victorious against Pompey’s and became the dictator of Rome.
