The Roman Empire was a complex and fascinating civilization that ruled much of Europe, western Asia, and northern Africa for over 500 years. At its height, the Roman Empire was one of the most powerful and influential empires in the world, and its legacy can still be seen today in the many countries that were once part of the empire.

The Roman Republic, which preceded the Roman Empire, was established around 509 BC. It was a federal republic with a complex system of government that included two consuls, a senate, and a system of checks and balances. The Roman Republic was known for its military prowess, and it conquered and annexed many lands during its early years.
