“Football players, the modern gladiators.” Many of us think that gladiators were only during Ancient Rome, and they don’t exist anymore. In this essay, i will be showing that the gladiators that used to fight during the Roman Empire are still present now, but with a different name “modern-day athletes”, especially football players.
In the ancient Rome, the gladiators used to fight with one another or with wild animals to entertain the people. These shows were made in big places called amphitheatre. Most of the gladiators were prisoner, slaves, or criminals. In this paragraph, I will be writing about the similarities and the differences between the ancient Roman gladiators and the modern-day athletes. We can talk about many similarities between the two sports, but I will mention only four. The first is popularity of the two sports. The gladiators’ shows and the football matches are watched by large number of people. In Ancient Rome crowds used to be in large amphitheatres like the Colosseum, and now people go to large stadiums to watch the football players. The second common point, for both sports, is celebrity. The winning gladiator became very famous, and the same for football players, they become famous and everybody knows them. The third similarity is related to the risk of injury. During gladiators fights, not all gladiators were killed, but most of them would be injured, or severely hurt. The same thing happens with football players that can have broken legs, or other serious injuries during the game. The last thing that relates gladiators fights to football matches is their common goal that is entertaining people. The ancient Romans used to go to watch the gladiators fight as a recreational activity and as an entertainment show. Nowadays the people who go to watch the football matches do the same thing, and they go with their families to enjoy the show also.
