Around 509 BCE, the Romans forced out the monarchy government and created a new form of government called the republic (Matthews, Noble, & Platt, 2014). Without a king, the early Roman Republic brought Rome full of chaos and unruliness. The Roman Republic replaced the king with two new rulers called consuls. The consul was able to create, change, or even reject ideas from other consuls, as this prevented an individual from gaining too much power as the previous kings. During the Roman Republic era, a power struggle between two social classes, the patricians and plebeians, lasted over 200 years (Editors of Encyclopedia Britannica, 2017).

Patricians were the wealthy class and the plebeians were more of the common class. The patricians controlled much of the senate, as they were able to pass laws on the entire population, whereas plebeians were unable to be in a political office and the only laws they could pass was on them (Matthews et al, 2014). By 287 BCE, plebeians were able to vote as well as participate in politics and some even gained wealth (Matthews et al, 2014). Rome became involved in a struggle for Carthage, as it was a very important city. It was in military times of emergency that Rome appointed a dictator, as sometimes they needed to come together when needed (Editors of Encyclopedia Britannica, 2017). However, the dictator could not be in command for longer than six months. After nearly a century of civil war, Augustus was known as the first citizen to bring order to all the chaos to Rome (Matthews et al, 2014).
