Benvolio: The One That Didn’t Really Have A Life Of His Own The character that made the play better is Benvolio. He is part of the house of the Montagues. He is the nephew of Montague, and Romeo’s cousin. Benvolio is helpful, brave, non-romantic, committed, caring, and protective. This was the most interesting character because he is not the main character, but he still is very important in the story (he also was one of the only characters that didn’t make really dumb decisions). If Romeo didn’t have Benvolio to talk to, he would be even more upset because he wouldn’t have anyone to talk to about his feelings. Helpful means giving your time and/or care to someone. Benvolio helped Montague when he was worried about Romeo and how upset he was lately. “See, where he comes. So please step aside, I’ll know his grievance or be much denied” (1.1.149-150), this quote is Benvolio letting Montague know that he will talk to Romeo and investigate what is making Romeo so sad that he is going to the woods to cry. When someone is having problems with love, their parents are not the first person they usually go to for advice, but if a parent notices their child is down, they are going to worry. He shows immense care for his cousin Romeo when he tells him that he will keep trying to get his mind off of the woman that he fell in love with, but doesn’t love him back. If Benvolio didn't care for Romeo, he wouldn't have his life revolve around Romeo´s. He never seemed to have any problems of his own, but whenever Romeo got in a bad situation, Benvolio was there to support him. For example in act 2 scene 1 Benvolio says: “ Come, he hath hid himself among these trees / To be consorted with the humorous night./ Blind is his love, and best befits the dark” (30-32). That quote took place after Romeo, Benvolio, and Montague attend a Capulet party to find Rosaline, but instead Romeo falls in love with Juliet. Even after Benvolio went through all that and risked to be killed if one of the Capulets recognized them, like Tybalt.
