The dialogue between Romeo and Mercutio often is captured through extreme close ups that allow the audience the view the intimate body language and eye contact between Romeo and Mercutio. These close ups are often in the point of view of either Mercutio or Romeo. This allows the audience to experience the close and homoerotic relationship two characters through the way they stare into each other’s eyes whilst they converse.
Costume
Costumes are also highly modernized. The Montague boys dress in Hawaiian shirts and sporting unnaturally colored hair, while the Capulet boys favor leather and metal-heeled boots. The costume chosen for each character to wear to Capulet’s party plays a huge role in the message the director wants to portray. Romeo is dressed in a suit of armour which has the associations of masculinity. Typically, a knight is often under the power of the king and is must conform to the code of chivalry. Metaphorically speaking, the king in this is Lord Capulet and the code of chivalry are the expectations from Romeo’s parents and society’s expectations. On the other hand, Mercutio is dressed in a glittery bralette and mini skirt coupled with lipstick and a wig. A more effective and symbolic use of light was during the sequence leading up to Mercutio’s death. This scene is staged in Sycamore Grove, and from the start of the scene a storm is brewing and the combination of the orangey-yellow sky and the murky ocean water help to create an atmosphere of tension and hatred.
