How far would you go to be with the love of your life at 13 years old? For Juliet, faking her own death wasn’t even the full extent of what she was willing to do to be with her Romeo. Romeo and Juliet is one of Shakespear’s most well known plays and was written in the 16th century. The modernised film adaptation produced by Baz Luhrman was released much later in 1996. The adaptation invites modern audiences to view love as an influential and powerful driving force. The portrayal of powerful love was demonstrated throughout the film and play as well as the influence it had on Romeo and Juliet’s actions. When Romeo first lays his eyes on Juliet he confesses “… For I ne’er saw true beauty till this night.” (Act 1: Scene 5) Conveying that Rosaline his previous ‘love’ now meant nothing to him. Their love is so consuming they knew they were destined for each other from the first glance. Shakespeare uses an extended metaphor to illustrate their first kiss by Juliet being a holy site and Romeo, a visiting, sinful pilgrim. “Then move not while my prayer’s effect I take. Thus from my lips, by yours, my sin is purg’d.” (Act 1: Scene 5) The sin from Romeo was passed onto Juliet where she continues to tease him into a second kiss “Then have my lips the sin that they have took.” Despite being a fleeting moment there was enough time for their connection and love for one another to form displaying the instantaneous power, love had over …show more content…

“Prodigious birth of love it is to me, that I must love a loathed enemy.” This line shows that despite Romeo being a Montague, Juliet can’t deny her love for him which like the play, highlights how emotion is the drive behind their decisions. The power of their love was captured in the film by using an orange hue each time the pair were together (see image above) this displays the warmth and strength of their bond and the drive they have towards one
