Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare is a well-known play taught in classrooms across the globe. It is regarded as a story of great love and tragedy. The namesake characters are lovers from different families who despise each other. That is why many people believe that the story is about how they were doomed from the start. Although many people believe that it is fate that determines our future, especially Romeo and Juliet’s, it is decisions that determine someone’s future. First, let’s discuss the other side. The two lovers could have decided that they shouldn’t be together. Rome says this when they meet at the ball. “Sin from my lips? O trespass sweetly urged! Give me my sin again”(Shakespeare 3.5.109). Romeo says this because he knows that Juliet is a Montague and their families would not like them to be together. However, instead of recognizing the fault in this newfound relationship, they agreed to get married without their parents knowing. They decided to get married so that if their parents were to separate them, it would be difficult to do so. Another instance of characters choosing love when they know there is danger is when in West Side Story, a musical based on Romeo and Juliet, Maria tells Tony to stop the rumble. Maria tells him to do so because she knows that people will get hurt because of it. People claim the reason that they died is that they couldn’t live without each other and that they had to do this for love. But both Romeo and Juliet had a choice; they both chose to die at their hand. When Romeo discovers Juliet seemingly dead, he decides he must die because he can’t be without her and drinks the poison. “Here’s to my love…thus with a kiss I die” Romeo had a choice in drinking the poison as it’s not like someone was forcing him to drink it. However, if he had not been blinded by love, he would have realized that she was not dead and only pretending. If he had discovered that she wasn’t dead, he would’ve spared himself; and Juliet.
