The Shakespearian tragedy, Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare, occurs in Fair Verona during medieval times. The Montagues and Capulets are two wealthy families that are quarreling with each other. Throughout the play, the families quarrel causing a negative impact on the city. Romeo and Juliet go through adversity as they try to live together and love each other married. They face violence, death, and other hardships because of the culture in Verona. Veronian culture forces children to grow up faster than they are ready to. Juliet, as a teenager, deals with death and forced marriage which causes her unnecessary stress, hurting her. While talking to Lord Capulet about marrying Juliet, Paris says “Younger than she are happy mothers made” (1,2). Paris is an example that most of the adults in this culture wish for the girls to be younger when they marry. Also, the constant fighting between the two families puts Juliet through the experience of death and violence at the young age of thirteen. When Tybalt is killed, Juliet is forced to encounter Cultural Violence. Romeo is often given more freedom than Juliet and other young girls, this causes men like Romeo to face adult challenges as a teenager. When Romeo asks the Friar to marry him and Juliet, he says, “They stumble that run fast” (2,3). Friar Laurence is warning Romeo that he is going too fast and these actions have consequences.
