Throughout Romeo and Juliet, by William Shakespeare, tragedy is demonstrated in numerous ways such as the actions of Romeo and Juliet, the role of fate and the actions of other characters in the play. Firstly, from the opening scene of the play, it is made clear that Capulets and Montagues have disliked each other for a long period of time. This sets the stage for the violence throughout the play and impacts Romeo and Juliet. As love between them is prohibited, this could be a reason for their love because of the desperation to be together. Additionally, Fate is foreshadowed multiple times throughout the text, such as near the beginning Romeo states that he is “fortune’s fool” which implies that he is useless before fate. This would mean Juliet would commit bigamy, which is the act of entering a marriage with someone while still being married to another. Equally important are the actions of other characters. For example, Friar Lawrence plays a big part in the story. His decision to marry Romeo and Juliet secretly and his plan to fake Juliet’s death in hope to reunite them together backfires as Romeo failed to receive his letter, believing that Juliet had died which made him poison himself, this made Juliet stab herself with his dagger. In addition, Tybalt’s aggressive behaviour played a role in the tragedy. His confrontation with Romeo and Mercutio, in which he slayed Mercutio, made Romeo fight him and win. This set off a chain of reactions such as Romeo being banished from Verona, which made it impossible for them to see each other, Juliet grieving over Tybalt, which caused Juliet stress and made her believe that she was going mad, and The Capulets being angered which fueled the anger between the families making them seek
