Haunted by Fate The oxford dictionary describes fate as, “the development of events beyond a person's control, regarded as determined by a supernatural power.” Fate overshadows our life from the second we are born to the second we die. Other’s fate affects our path in life from before we even exist, and our fate affects generations of those after us. From the time our ancestors met each other, and everything that led to that moment, fate oversaw our lives. Fate makes us question our decisions, act on impulses, and ultimately lead our lives in the direction they undertake. In William Shakespeare’s play, Romeo and Juliet, fate shepherds the story from the sixth line to the final line. The star-crossed lovers face fate from the second they meet to the second they die. Predicted in “Now Romeo is beloved and loves again” (Chorus.2.5) fate discloses Romeo’s deathly future love for Juliet. Similarly seen in, “A pair of star-crossed lovers take their life… The fearful passage of their death-marked love” (Prologue 6, 9). Fate bears an illiterate Capulet servant to carry a message, this illiterate servant asks Romeo to read the letter. This leads Romeo to recognize Rosaline’s name on the list and therefore inclines him to go to the Capulet party, it is here that he meets Juliet. By fate’s hands, Romeo falls in love with Juliet, his enemy, at first sight, “Here’s much to do with hate, but more with love” (1.1.180). Fate predetermined Romeo and Juliet’s mortal love for each other from the moment they spoke outside Juliet’s balcony after the party. Romeo realizes this when speaking to himself, “As in a winged messenger of heaven… OF mortals that fall back to gaze on him” (2.2.31,33).
