Maxx Barrett Duffy English 9 3/13/23 Romeo and Juliet is a tragedy written by Shakespeare, where two young lovers are driven to commit suicide over eachother. Their families are rivals, which creates a barrier between the two of them. Neither of Romeo or Juliet’s actions are what caused the tragedy, though. Most things they did were reactionary to their surroundings. Romeo and Juliet came from families that opposed each other, the Capulets and the Montagues. The very first scene in the play is of the two families fighting in the streets. The prince of Verona had to break the fight up, and announce that fighting between the two was punishable by death in order to put a stop to it. This shows that although the prince had probably been lenient in the past because both families were wealthy, extreme action still had to be taken as a method of prevention. If fighting between the two families is this often, and this frequent, then maintaining a friendship with somebody from the opposing household would be nearly impossible, let alone a romantic relationship. …show more content…

When they see each other, it’s considered love at first sight. It’s possible that Juliet fell for Romeo as a form of escape, not rebellion. If she loved somebody else, then she may not be forced to marry. Juliet never outwardly expressed she didn’t want to marry Paris, but it was still a very sudden proposition, and she was still young. She was most likely expecting it, though, since those expectations likely would have been put upon her from a young age. Romeo likely took interest in Juliet because she was a “rebound” for him.
