Heroes can be found not just in literature, but in everyday life, and in every one of us. The heroic qualities shown in Romeo and Juliet vary widely from character to character, and each is illustrative of and relatable to characteristics we might see within ourselves, despite the fact that the text is more than 400 years old. The central themes and archetypes demonstrated in Romeo and Juliet still mirror many of the societal and moral dynamics encountered today. Therefore, it is not far-fetched to believe that a hero can be identified within this classic story. While Romeo Montague is often seen as the central heroic figure due to his prominent role and tragic fate, Juliet Capulet emerges as the more compelling hero of the narrative. For instance, Juliet says, ”deny thy father and refuse thy name; or if thou wilt not, be sworn my love, and I'll no longer be a Capulet” (2.2). This shows that Juliet has the courage to defy her parents and Shakespearean normalities in an era where women were expected to be obedient and passive. Additionally, Juliet’s heroism is further exemplified by her resourcefulness and decisiveness in difficult situations. When faced with an arranged marriage to Paris, whom she does not love, Juliet actively seeks a solution rather than resigning to her fate. Juliet’s agency further cements her role as the hero because unlike many characters who allow their fates to be determined by external forces, Juliet purposefully shapes her own destiny. She takes decisive action by orchestrating a secret marriage to Romeo, demonstrating her ability to take control of her life and choices. Her plea to Romeo, “If that thy bent of love be honorable, Thy purpose marriage, send me word tomorrow” (2.2), shows her assertiveness in directing the course of their relationship. In her alliance with Friar Laurence, Juliet is able to devise a plan to reunite with Romeo, which illustrates her proactiveness and her ability to take control of her destiny, despite the adverse
