We all know that a love life starts to take form around the teenage years. But paired with the impulsive nature of teens, how is their impulsivity increased regarding love? Today, the average “misunderstood”, “black sheep”, “nobody gets me” teenager will find love, and it is important for parents to be able to not only accurately predict how they will become more impulsive, but to act effectively in response to it. The ideas painted in our heads are what we see in literature, and film, these are meant to help us recognize these teenage irrational behaviors. Known for trying to do exactly what they are told not to, when pushed to an extent, this defiant behavior is likely due to the constructive nature of parents, causing them to go for exactly what they can't. In Romeo and Juliet, several examples of constrictive parents are displayed. When Lady Capulet takes Juliet’s choices away and tells her in Act 3, “Marry, my child, early next Thursday morn, The gallant, young, and noble gentleman, The County Paris, at Saint Peter's Church, Shall happily make thee there a joyful bride” (3.5 117-120) Juliet is only more inclined to rebel. Especially since this is love, an important thing to develop early in life to not to struggle as much later in life, at her young age, where marriage seems even more binding. Quite often parents feel very strongly about their child's love life, and crushes, but they need to set healthy boundaries and protect these feelings. Dr.Pickhardt, a psychologist explains the importance of protecting adolescent crushes in his article “Adolescence and the Teenage Crush” when he says that “parents need to respect an adolescent crush and not dismiss or put it down. After all, it is an early approximation of love. It isn't uncommon to see people acting out due to a struggle they had or something negative they faced, but these actions can heavily impact a relationship. As all crushes are different, they can have different impacts on a person, the identity crush depicts a person in love with the idea of someone. Dr.Pickhardt makes it known that these crushes hold a lot over teens,” it is because of the idealization that crushes have such momentary power” (Adolescence and the Teenage Crush) Influencing the behavior of a teen can even cause their relationships to fail. Infatuation comes up because of the idea of a person and not them for who they are, this is a way teens' judgment can be clouded and lead them in the wrong direction, further making clear the importance of this understanding. In Romeo and Juliet, Romeo was quick to move on from Rosaline, it was an all, then nothing situation. The scenario was so abrupt that even Friar Lawrence seemed to notice, when he offered Romeo some advice in Act 2, remaining in a calm and suggestive manner Friar makes his claim, “wisely and slow, they stumble that run fast” Suggesting that Romeo to take more time to think his decisions through was wise of Friar to point out as this was the cause of his previous relationship to fail. Romeo wasn't in love with Rosaline, he
