Though you can’t choose, which comes with a relationship, your decisions shape it’s fate and it shapes yours whether that be for better or for worse. In William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet, he illustrates the connection of the themes of love and hate through the idea that love and hate have the power to transform one's character and priorities. When Romeo walks in seeing Tybalt he says “Tybalt, the reason that I have to love thee / Doth much excuse the appertaining rage”(3.1.63-64). But soon after when Tybalt challenges Romeo to a duel he refuses leading to Romeo defending his honor by fighting instead. Romeo reaction is saying “Gentlemen, for shame forbear this outrage!”(3.1.88). This shows that his love for Juliet overpowered his hate for Tbalt. This is because we see how intense their fued is and how much it effects their pride so Romeo refusing to fight Tybalt shows that for Juliet he would swallow that pride and ensure Tybalts safety. We know this as Juliet says “And with this knife I’ll help it presently” (4.1.55) then later says “No, no, this shall forbid it. Lie thou there” (4.3.24). She says these things to warn us and other characters that she will not hesitate to kill herself. We also see this when Romeo says “Doth my name lodge? Tell me, that I may sack / The hateful mansion” (3.3.116-117). So this shows that love and hate changed Romeo and Juliet’s will to live. Juliet shows this because she illustrates her love for Romeo because she is making him a priority over her family and social norms. But most of all she has proritized Romeo over life itself leading her to believe she can’t live without him knowing he is somewhere else. This shows how much love has changed her. But it also shows how hate has effected her because it was her hate for a new marrige that pushed her over the edge of thinking death was her only option. This hate and fear she had that she would be stuck created fueled her fear of living without Romeo showing her hate changed her character because she had become more independent doing what her heart desired. But Romeo was also threstening to kill himself for love, the same as Juliet, but also hate aswell because it was the hate for his life
