Was “their parents’ strife” the reason for the love between Romeo and Juliet proving to be fatal?
The play ‘Romeo and Juliet’ written by Shakespeare demonstrates how powerful love can be while it shows how hatred towards one another would result in tragedy ending. This play is well- known by the world and it is considered as the best love story of all time because the story gives us a moral lesson for couples and everyone. “Parents ongoing strife” is certainly one of the reasons that caused the death of Romeo and Juliet as keeping their love a secret had unforeseen consequences. However, other factors were also important in contributing to the tragic ending. Fate or destiny, the role played by Friar Lawrence and the Nurse does have some relation. The play was set in Verona where two families of Montague and Capulet are at war with each other. The feud that has been going on for so long, people have forgotten when and why it started. The hatred between those two families was so powerful, even their servants hated each other even though they weren’t related. This can be seen through the opening of the play, where in the public square of Verona, the two servants were having an argument. In the Act 2, Scene2 the famous balcony scene, we were aware that Juliet questioned why her Romeo was given that name; she wishes if he could “Reject his father and refuse his name” so they would be no barriers between their relationship. Because of the feuding going on between the two parents both hide their marriage in order to prevent their parents from separating their love. Their family’s feud not only killed Romeo and Juliet but innocent people like: Paris, Mercutio and Tybalt.
