On February 1, 2017, in Media, PA, I went to see Romeo and Juliet, a production by Media Theaters. The tale of Romeo and Juliet is a well- known tragic love story. The story takes place in Verona, Italy where our young star-crossed lovers will meet. There, they will fall in love, but only to find out that they are family enemies. Juliet, being Capulet, and Romeo being a Montague, yet they still find a way to fall in love with each other. Though, not every fairytale has a happy ending, just like Romeo and Juliet, when they both die in each other's arms.
During the play, I was very intrigued at the variation of costumes the characters wore. The use of props were used in a very clever and amusing way. Yet, what I enjoyed the most was the humorous dialogue that was held with all the actors. This take of Romeo and Juliet was very fun to watch because the script was simplified so a younger audience could understand what Shakespeare meant. I really liked Mercutio’s humorous dialogue with Romeo. I could see how it made the younger audience feel more involved and connected to the play. All the characters had a very natural disposition that made them seem “real”. During the play, some lines were over exaggerated during the wrong time, but the actors did a very good job keeping themselves together. What’s great about a play like Romeo and Juliet is the empathy that you feel for them. We have all wanted something we knew we couldn’t have, but still go for it anyway. Romeo and Juliet go threw a lot of struggles that are clearly shown throughout the play. Their biggest enemy is their family, and avoiding your family is a very hard thing to do, so you see how hard it was for them. My favorite scene in the play is the well known balcony scene.
