Romeo and Juliet is a play written by William Shakespeare in the late 1500’s. It is about a young boy, Romeo, and a young girl, Juliet, who instantly fall in love and get married. Their fathers are the heads of rival families and their love is forbidden. In the play Romeo and Juliet, by William Shakespeare, Romeo and Juliet were mainly experiencing infatuation, not true love. Romeo is the son of Lord Montegue, and Juliet, the daughter of Lord Capulet. The Montegue’s and the Capulet’s are rival families both living in Verona, Italy in the fifteenth century. Romeo and Juliet want what they can not have. On her balcony, Juliet says, “Deny thy father and refuse thy name;/ Or, if thou wilt not, be but sworn my love,/ And I’ll no longer be a Capulet” (II.ii.34-36). Juliet is telling Romeo to turn against his family and to stop being a Montague. She tells him that if he won’t do it, she will change hers as long as she knows he loves her. They know they can not be together unless Romeo stops being a Montegue or Juliet stops being a Capulet. Because they can not tell anyone about their marriage, they have to sneak around at night and can not be seen together in the day. In the morning, Juliet says to Romeo, “O, now be gone. More light and light it grows” (III.v.35). Juliet tells Romeo that she sees more and more light, meaning it is day, so he has to go. Additionally, Juliet may have been looking for a way to get out of marrying Paris; the arranged marriage her father has set up for her.
