Have you ever wondered what started the chain reaction in Romeo and Juliet that caused many deaths? Some might say that it was Romeo’s lust, or Lord and Lady Capulet’s bad parenting. The one who is actually at fault is Friar Laurence. He should have been protecting the teens as a sort of father figure. Instead, he puts them in danger at every turn. Friar Laurence was aware that the marriage of Romeo and Juliet was not logical. He said that it was just Romeo’s lust and not actual love. That means that he knew that Romeo was just acting on hormones and he knew it was not real love. As Friar Lawrence said, "Young men's love then lies not truly in their hearts, but in their eyes." It is not a great idea to give a 13-year-old a potion that could potentially kill her. It is what got her killed in the play. It caused so much confusion and sadness that resulted in Romeo killing himself and thereafter, Juliet killing herself. Romeo could have also gone down a more violent route if things had ended up just a little differently. If he had gotten the news that Juliet was dead before receiving the letter, he could have suspected the Friar of murder and thought that the Friar was just trying to cover it up. That could have resulted in Friar Lawrence's murder and therefore, Romeo's execution. There were better ways to deal with her marriage to Paris. Some might claim that Friar Laurence was just doing his best to help the lovers. After all, the entire play, he was just giving help to the two teens as much as he could, right? Well, not really, but it is. Giving the sleeping potion to Juliet resulted in 3 people getting killed when there were better, less risky decisions. He could have just sent Juliet to Mantua with Romeo when he got
