By looking at Romeo, and how he dealt with his and Juliet’s passionate and fast paced relationship in Romeo & Juliet, Shakespeare argues that Romeo and Juliet’s false love with one another led them to become increasingly obsessive over one another, suggesting that infatuation when mistaken for love will lead to rashful decisions without thought. Even in the beginning of the play, when Romeo and Juliet’s relationship has just begun, they rush into their newfound ‘love’. Romeo, in his excitedness immediately goes to his ghostly father, Friar Lawrence, to share the news, and to ask for Friar Lawrence to marry him and Juliet. After Romeo is banished, he flees to Mantua. Romeo later receives news from his servant Balthasar, that Juliet is dead. Heartbroken, Romeo makes a vow, declaring, “Well, Juliet, I will lie with thee tonight. / Let’s see for means. O mischief, thou art swift / to enter the thoughts of desperate men!” (5.1.34 -36). Romeo decides that he will die with Juliet, next to her in Verona. Romeo then to look for a way to kill himself. He blames mischief, an annoyance, for making him think this way. By looking at Romeo speaking to an inanimate object, mischief, we can see that there is presence of an apostrophe. The apostrophe is important because it shows how Romeo appears to be insane, as no normal person would be talking to something that isn’t a real person, especially not blaming that inanimate object for causing his pain. His insanity is fueled by the news that his love is dead, demonstrating just how much Romeo’s obsessed with Juliet. When Romeo says “desperate men,” he develops a desperate tone. When people are desperate for something, they jump to conclusions and/or bad solutions to their problems, just as Romeo did when he immediately jumped to killing himself as he states in the first line. Romeo’s desperate tone helps the readers understand how impacted he was by the situation and allows the reader to further see the reason behind his decision to commit suicide. This demonstrates that Romeo’s blinded about the fact that he is completely infatuated and obsessed, and simply thinks that due to their ‘love’ he has to kill himself, showing how his infatuation led him to insanity and the inability to take his time and make the right
