An impact is defined in the dictionary as something that has ‘a marked effect or influence’ ; this can be understood to occur on almost anything from a country to a single person. In assessing the impact a person has made, for example on a country, it can be considered under three main headings; social, economic and political. Social Social impact is the effect an activity has on a surrounding community (including individuals and families) , for example the emancipation of the serfs under Alexander II. In this era, social impact is very important, as this was one of the main turning points in the 100-year period; social policy was one of the key tools for remaining in power as peasants began to fight for their rights and more freedom. It is often described as just being another word for the importance of a situation however it can also encompass the negative or positive impact that the event or person has. In this essay both the impact and the significance of an individual are going to be explored to answer the question posed. For example, whilst Tsar Nicholas II was significant in the fact that his shortcomings and mishandling of a difficult situation led to the abolishment of the Tsars and the Russian Revolution, he, as a person had very little impact in anything that happened to the country. For example, he imposed very few policies and the ones that were introduced were often not enforced or executed properly. In discussing the statement, ‘Lenin had the biggest impact on Russia between the years 1861-1941’, it is important to consider the other people who had a significant impact on Russian history during that time. This is likely to include such influential leaders such as Nicholas II, Alexander II, Joseph Stalin, Leon Trotsky and even Karl Marx. In reality, the two individual who had the greatest influence on Russia during the period 1861 - 1941 were Joseph Stalin and Vladimir Lenin. I have therefore chosen to focus on these two individuals and compare and contrast their impact on Russian
