Aristotle defined a tragic hero as one who has a major character flaw and experiences a tragedy which leads to the downfall of that character. The character must experience a loss in fortune and suffer beyond what they deserve. In today’s society Ryan Lochte can be considered a tragic hero. Ryan Lochte is a twelve time olympic medalist. Ryan was born August 3, 1984 in upstate New York but grew up in Florida. Ryan Lochte started swimming at the age of five, however, he did not take swimming seriously until he was in high school. Lochte’s career as a professional swimmer started after he qualified for the 2004 olympics since then he has has competed in three additional olympic summer games. Ryan Lochte had too much pride to admit to his faults which lead to him being accused of falsifying a robbery report. Ryan Lochte made a claim that he was pulled over and held at gunpoint by police officials in Brazil and robbed. Days later it was revealed that there was no robbery. A video was released showing Ryan and other swimmers vandalizing a bathroom. Additionally to video evidence multiple witnesses confirmed the vandalism reports. Ryan was intoxicated and vandalised the bathroom of a gas station. The Brazil police also confirmed that there was no robbery. Due to Ryan Lochte’s arrogance and incapability to admit to vandalism he faced charges for falsifying a robbery report. Ryan’s actions affected him as well as the rest of the country. Not only did he lose respect, America lost respect from the rest of the world. In addition to legal charges Ryan lost four sponsors totaling in a one million dollars loss. Ryan lost his credibility and fans as well as a large portion of money. Speedo, one of Ryan's sponsors for ten years, withdrew their contract with Ryan and donated the rest of the money from his contract to charity.
