Throughout my Bachelor of Social Work, Professors and other faculty continued to press the idea that we must pursue graduate school in order to get the most out of our degrees. However, my pursuit for graduate Social Work education began in my third year after finishing both my qualitative and quantitative research courses. I found the research aspect of social work very interesting, as there were no limits regarding what I studied. I am also a large advocate for innovation, and I truly believe research brings out innovation in a number of ways, acting as a catalyst for progressive change. The same can be said when comparing the Canadian legally blind population to the general population living with disabilities in Canada. In 2006 the general unemployment rate in Canada was 6.8%, which did not account for those who are living with disabilities. The unemployment rate for Canada’s population living with disabilities was 10.4%, and the unemployment rate for the legally blind population was substantially higher at 26.4%. This shows that legally blind people are 4x as likely to be unemployed than those without a disability, and 2.5x than those that do have a different disability (Benoit et. al, 2013). This is the direct result of the stigmatization of partially sighted people and the prejudices towards this group. For this, I believe the lack of representation in the workplace is one the largest issues facing the legally blind community of Canada and is something I will continue to raise awareness
