In Chapter 9 of the book “Major Problems in California History” the authors use the key term “Hollywood” which is known as the “film colony” where movie stars lived and played. The author uses the term “Hollywood” as life in a movie by stating, “The existence of “Hollywood” as a residential community proved that the kind of life depicted on the silver screen could be found in reality.” Also, the author uses the key term “Hollywood” as a glamorous version of the American Dream by stating, “Ordinary people became acquainted with the movie stars’ opulent lifestyle through stories and photographs in fan magazines. Another way the key term “Hollywood” could be considered is as a resort city also named “Hollywood” located in southeastern Florida.

The events of WW2 in the 1940s lead to further actions that deeply impacted the Japanese American community. In 1942, just two months after the attack on Pearl Harbor, President Roosevelt, as commander-in-chief, used Executive Order 9066 that resulted in the internment of Japanese Americans. The first internment facility to be established was the Manzanar War Relocation Center near Lone Pine, California.
Founded by an escaped slave, John J. Neimore, The California Eagle was one of the oldest and longest running Black newspaper in Los Angeles, California. Under the direction of Neimore, the newspaper was first called, “The California Owl.” The newspaper was started to help ease the transitions of black settlers to the West. Settlers only had to check the paper to find information about housing, jobs, and other information to make living in the west less complicated. The newspaper became one of the leading papers of the era later under the control of Charlotta A. Bass, who took control of the paper after the death of Neimore in 1912.

It is located in Downtown Sacramento. It was built with neoclassical style with many features found on ancient Greek and Roman buildings. Sacramento is one of the oldest cities in the western region of the United States and Sacramento is filled with rich history. The city and the capital of the great state of California dates back to 1839 when a man named John Sutter created a small rugged town that he would use for farming and business opportunities. John Sutter’s intentions and thoughts were to be given a Mexican land grant, however, as his small town grew, more opportunities started to rise. Due to the large amount of gold in California, Sutter’s town was officially established in 1849 and it was named Sacramento. When the city was first established, it consisted of small shanty shacks and poorly constructed wooden buildings.

In 1968 Martin Luther King, a civil rights activist, was assassinated in Memphis, Tennessee. That same year the Association of American Medical Colleges made a recommendation to open up nearly twelve percent to first year medical school classes to minority students(McNeese pg. 14).

The 49ers And The California Ethos Gold was discovered in California in 1848 (Holliday, 1998, 1). The news about the discovery of gold in California spread locally and globally, attracting people from all over the world, as this historical event is famously known as the California Gold Rush. Gold diggers and wealth seekers arrived to California with the dream of becoming rich and improving their standard of living. These people, eager to become rich instantly, left their families and farms behind. I observed a Mauston City Council meeting on September 8th at the City Hall. The meeting lasted for a total of 38 minutes, 13 minutes of that time was spent in closed session. The members in attendance were Mayor Brian McGuire and council members Dennis Nielsen, Dennis Emery, Francis McCoy, Steve Leavitt, Rick Noe, Floyd Babcock, and Leslie Householder. Joining them were Acting Police Chief Mike Zilisch, City Administrator Nathan Thiel, Public Works Director Rob Nelson, and Administrative Assistant Diane Kropiwka. Many high school students were there to observe the meeting.
