Have you ever met someone made so purely of self-sacrifice that they have no space for the kindness that should come with it? Darrel(Darry) Curtis, the oldest of the Curtis brother’s pack, of S.E.Hinton’s The Outsiders is the spitting image of someone made up of giving to his loved ones. Darry is a remarkable character that will teach you how to love and appreciate what you have through his mistakes and the things he took for granted. “Me and Darry just didn’t dig each other. I could never please him. If I brought home B’s he wanted A’s. If I got A’s he wanted to make sure they stayed A’s…He never hollered at Soda. He just hollered at me.” (21). This is how Darry treated Ponyboy. As you can tell, Darry wants Ponyboy to excel in his classes, to get straight A’s like any other strict parent would. Darry couldn't get over himself after Ponyboy left: “Kid, you ought to see Darry. He’s takin’ this mighty hard… Darry and me nearly went nuts when you ran out like that. Darry is awful sorry he hit you… Darry hasn’t got the slightest notion at where you at and it is nearly killing him.” (89-90). Here, Darry’s emotion is very clearly seen through the voice of other characters, and through their voice you can hear that Darry is blaming himself for what happened and that he is broken from Ponyboy’s foolhardy actions. …show more content…

Darry’s problem is that he gained so much from his experience with Ponyboy, but sometimes he acts to tough to notice it. But we know he’s just too scared to show his gained knowledge and life lesson. We should all try to avoid a personality such as Darry, because his actions can severely hurt someone, emotionally and physically. Darry broke a part of Ponyboy by slapping him, the part that believed that Darry might just be different. This bond healed again of course through their rejoyce. Darry taught the world something very important: that the ones who are the hardest to love need it most. That moment when Ponyboy hugged Darry, Darry regained a certain virtue in his life. The one that told him he was needed. If you have a cold-eyed husky in your life that makes you want to scream and cry, stick around because your devotion and love will help them slowly heal over.
