In The Outsiders, Darry Curtis plays a large role in influencing the gang and shaping their actions and attitudes. Darry is the oldest member of the gang and serves as a leader and protector, both to his brothers and to the other members of the gang. He finished high school with great grades and a football scholarship, but Darry decided to stay and help his brothers Ponyboy and Sodapop Curtis. He is also one of the most influential members of the gang. He is the one who trains them in fighting and encourages them to defend themselves and their honor. Darry is fiercely protective of the gang and will do whatever it takes to keep them safe. As Ponyboy says, "Darry could be tough and hard, but he was always there when you needed him" (Hinton, 71). This quote shows how Darry is a tough and fierce leader and he is always there to support the gang when they need him. It also proves that Darry protects the gang as much as he can even if it takes heavy discipline. Next, when Ponyboy was glorifying Darry, he says, "He took charge of situations, kept his head and was never afraid to make decisions, even when they were hard." (Hinton 55) This quote explains that the greasers love Darry for his strong mentality. This proves the point that he teaches the gang to stand up for themselves and what they believe in because he is an inspiration to the greasers, making them want to be like him, strong and resilient. To summarize, Darry instructs the gang on how to be strong and stand up for their own
