I remeber Alice Magaw and Lavinia Lloyd Dock from the Nursing history books where we used to study. And also I must mention about Clara Barton who was known as the “Angel of the Battlefield” during the Civil War and assigned special duties by President Lincoln. Dorothea Dix who taught poor and neglected children, dedicated her time to social welfare in England, founded the first public mental hospital in America and became the Superintendent of Union Army Nurses and Mary Eliza Mahoney, who was the first African-American professional registered nurse. Mary Queen of Scots was born into the throne and pronounced queen of Scotland at six days old when her father died. In her lifetime, she was the queen of two countries: Scotland and France. Mary spent most of her adult life imprisoned in Lochleven Castle and later escaped and fled to England to seek help from her cousin Elizabeth. When Mary went to receive help from her cousin it did not work in her favor. She had several husbands and secret lovers that caused problems with her ruling.
I chose Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton to be my confirmation saint. She became the first native born American saint in 1975. I believe that she influenced everyone around her, and that’s what I hope to do. Elizabeth Ann Bayley was born in New York in 1774 to a wealthy family. When she was just three years old, her mother died.
The saint that I chose for my confirmation saint is Saint Kateri Tekakwitha. I chose her because of her story. The story of her conversion to Christianity and her extraordinary holiness was an inspiration to me when I was searching for saints. She was the first Native American Saint in the United States of America and Canada. When she was four, she contracted smallpox which left her face disfigured, impairing her eyesight, and depriving her of her parents.
St. Bernadette By Haden Luna One Thursday, February 11, 1858, when Bernadette was sent with her younger sister and a friend to gather firewood, a very beautiful Lady appeared to her above a rose bush in a grot to Massabielle. The Lovely lady was dressed in blue and white, she smiled at Bernadette and then made the sign of the cross with the rosary of ivory and gold. Bernadette fell on her knees, took out her own rosary and began to pray the rosary. The beautiful Lady was God’s Mother, the Blessed Virgin Mary.

She also began St. Joseph’s Academy and the first fee Catholic School for girls staffed by Sisters in Emmitsburg, PA. Mother Seton legacy includes six religious communities with more than 5,000 members, hundreds of schools, social service centers, and hospitals throughout the United States and the world. She was the first U.S. born canonized Saint.
During their marriage, it is said that she heard heavenly music in her heart and she sang to God for guidance. Because of this, she has become the patron saint of music, church music in particular. Music also includes being the patron saint of musicians, composers, instrument makers, and poets. During the Middle Ages, songs were written and sung in her honor and many followers wrote music and made statues, buildings, and later academies in her name that honor music. This adheres to me because of my connection to music.
Joan of Arc was a well-known heroine of France for her leadership during the Lancastrian Phase during the Hundreds Years’ War. Joan’s full name was Jeanne d’Arc She was born January 6, 1412, to a tenant farmer named Jacques d’Arc and his wife Isabelle. Joan’s full name was Jeanne d’Arc. Although she was never taught to read or write, her Pious mother taught her to have a deep love for the Catholic Church and its teachings.
Rose was a hardworking, obedient, and caring person as she helped support her family when her father lost all his money in the journey of mining. She would make lace and she would help with the family gardened. She decided to take on the role model of St. Catherine of Siena and she knew that her calling was to help the Indians and to be able to evangelize them. She had a charitable quality and wanted that to one of her focuses on life.

St. Frances Cabrini was dedicated and devoted to christianity, and was a loving, caring person. First of all, Cabrini was the patron of immigrants, and hospital administors. She was canonized, which is a big honor, by Pope Pius Xl on November 13,1938. She was dedicated to living a life for religious work from young age of eight or nine years old.
The Baroque period covers one hundred and fifty years from 1600 to 1750. Its characteristics tend to include, lavish, over the top, expensive and much more then necessary. The period is painted literally with architecture, paintings, clothing, food and much more that continuously begs people of today to ask ‘why?’. The use of frill and extravagance in art in this period has become less of a question of ‘why’ and more of a question ‘where is the extra?’, because this part in history is centered around adding extra ornamentation to everything. With such an over the top part in history, it would seem impossible to pick one piece that could embody every aspect of the Baroque Era but it is to be proven that one piece has such potential.
