Sal Paradise: A Person Who Changes to the West Coast Mentality

The “old” Sal of New York has changed to the “new” Sal by the end of the novel through his experiences on the road, meeting new people, and connecting with family members Sal hit the road to gain a different experience than he was currently getting in New York. He wanted to change his approach on America. Sal was able to accomplish his goals by leaving his East coast mentality in the East coast, and exploring the West with an open mind.

However, when they reached those cities (such as New York, San Francisco, and Mexico City), they felt the obligation that they needed to leave. “I never felt sadder in my life. LA is the loneliest and most brutal of American cities; New York gets god-awful cold in the winter but there’s a feeling of wacky comradeship somewhere in some streets. LA is a jungle.” (Part 1 Chapter 13). Even when the group finally though they were having a good time in Mexico City, they felt the need to leave. This teaches Sal that wherever you go, there is always something else to explore. Sal and the group didn’t go on the road to find a city and be confined to living in that particular city. They went on the road to explore different cultures and possibly use those different experiences in their literary work.
The fourth theme that changed Sal is his ability to connect with his Aunt in New York City. Due to the groups low money, they often found themselves sleeping on benches or on the street. However, when the group arrived in New York, Sal returned home to visit his Aunt. When they went to visit his Aunt, his Aunt offered that they could stay with her during their time at New York. However, Sal’s aunt only lets Dean stay a few days because she claims that he is trouble. This taught Sal that his family members are there to guide him and look out for
