Salem Witch Trials In The Crucible By Arthur Miller

The Crucible is a well-known famous play written by Arthur Miller in 1953. The actions of this play are written based on the events of the Salem witch trials that took place in Salem Massachusetts specifically in 1692 to 1693. During this year, nearly 20 individuals lost their lives due to the insane accusation of witchcraft. The trials that took place were nothing like the trials you would know today, a simple accusation implemented guilt. There were nearly 200 individuals that were accused of practicing witchcraft in this year.

Miller start us off with a group of young girls that run off into the woods to go dance at night. Included in this group happens to be a few of the people in the pastor's household. That was his slave his daughter

Abigail first blames Tituba, the black slave for the Parris household. Abigail feeling as this was a suitable accusation due to the Colony realizing she was black, a slave, and from a different culture. As we have seen before fear has a specific way of making us react in an irrational manner. People will always do whatever they need to do in order to protect themselves and not the actual community. Whenever trouble pursues it's up to somebody else to take action and lead before a community decides to work together. As the reader will begin to realize, The Crucible does not cover every trial and does not cover full specs of the witch hunts. Due to the rough times in 1953 post World War II, the country was in fear of communism. This time known by many in history as McCarthyism. The mass amount of propaganda and the confessions of double agent spying for Russia by several high-ranking government officials in our country led to a divided in the people. It is to my belief that Arthur Miller wrote this book in order to remind individuals of the present how we must learn from our past. As history is always due to repeat itself, there is a similarity how the townspeople point fingers at others it accusation of witchcraft, and how Americans were point fingers at others and accusations of being communist. Miller's action to write The Crucible leads him to be similar to John Proctor. Knowing that he could get in trouble for writing this play could land him the same punishment during the trials, he moves forward with it anyway. None-the-less Miller succeeds in writing a successful play that mentally communicates with the communities and how they respond when faced with fear. Arthur Miller reminds us we should always take a second look when attempting to cooperate with existing current power and act with good moral and
