Salem Witch Trials In The Crucible By Arthur Miller

681 Words3 Pages
The Crucible by Arthur Miller takes place in Salem, Massachusetts, in the year 1692. The story is based upon the actual and quite infamous witch trials that happened in the town. The trials were caused by an outbreak of the townspeople accusing each other of practicing witchcraft. There was religious fear fueling it, but the accusations were mostly a selfish way to eliminate rivals or take their property. As a result of this, most of the houses and streets in Salem were empty because everyone was either in jail or had been hung. Today, Salem recognizes their history by calling themselves “the witch city” and even the logo on their police cars features a woman on a broomstick. The conflict in The Crucible is an internal one for John Proctor.
