Aesop once said, “No act of kindness, no matter how small, is ever wasted” (Aesop). Any type of volunteering or service, however small or large, a person would want to participate in, the Salvation Army probably offers it. The Salvation Army’s goals and works, what volunteers do to contribute, and the benefits of volunteering with the organization are all reasons a person would want to assist with their missions and purpose. The Salvation Army’s mission statement states, “Its mission is to preach the gospel of Jesus Christ and to meet human needs in His name without discrimination” (The Salvation Army). The Salvation Army does not have requirements a person has to meet in order to help the organization (The Salvation Army). Many people get involved with Salvation Army by visiting their local office or store and asking what needs to be done in the community. Financial support, such as online donations, planned giving, wills, and gift annuities, go a long way in helping the Salvation Army with its efforts. Another way that I have been personally involved is item donation. When my family and I decide it is time to clean out our closets, we carry our lightly used clothes to the Salvation Army store in Houston. Along with clothing donations, one can also donate things all the way from cars to furniture and household goods (The Salvation Army). If a person would rather get involved instead of just donating, the organization is completely open to that too. In addition to the activities listed that the Salvation Army welcomes people to volunteer with, there are community care ministries. These ministries are for people of all ages and backgrounds to learn how to love and care for people through acts of service. The Salvation Army achieves this by providing educational institutes, motivational dialogue, and interaction. Nearly 3.4 million people volunteered with their organization in 2012, but they are in constant need for more. Just in Northeast Mississippi, the Salvation Army has made a monumental influence. Salvation Army Women’s Auxiliary raised $53,000 through March’s Empty Bowls fundraiser in 2014. Major Sue Dorman of the Salvation Army stated that the check would go towards its food pantry but only covers about half of the budget. This individual unit provides lunch five days a week all year (Manning). With the many different programs, a person could become experienced in almost any field he or she wanted. Going home after a day of volunteering to help people not quite as well off as oneself is always a wonderful feeling. Meeting all kinds of different people could help anyone at becoming a more-rounded, gregarious person. Every time a person volunteers in a way that involves other people, he or she is making an impact on someone’s life. Just knowing that encourages one to volunteer more and to continue to better themselves and the world around them.
