Ralph, one of the most important characters in the novel serves as the human ego, a subconscious mind that works by reason and common sense. However, even the conscious and reasonable mind can vanish in a society with no structure and civilization. Ralph focuses on the important and common sense actions that need to be taken in order to survive and get rescued. In chapters 6 and 7, there are more signs of Jack and everyone else disobeying Ralph, implying the further strain of Jack and Ralph’s relationship. In Chapter 8, Ralph angered Jack simply by calling him and his hunters cowardly and ineffective. In response, he unsuccessfully tries to impeach Ralph then permanently runs away into the forest, with many others joining him. A small provocation from Ralph causing Jack to form his own separate group shows how volatile the tension in their relationship now is. It can also be seen that Jack now fully rejects Ralph’s leadership in favour of his own.
He says “Who cares” when Ralph says he’s breaking the rules and “Bollocks to the rules”. Jack only gets worse as we move into the future. Jack sets up his own group of savages who paint themselves and hunt pigs, in which he is chief of. At the ending Ralph is informed by SamnEric that Jack had Roger sharpen a stick on both ends for Ralphs head to be placed on.
He gradually calls a meeting as he sees that the littluns are being driven by fear. He precedes to ask if the beast was actually seen by any of the boys and if it is real like a true leader would. As the littluns talk, they are made fun of by Jack but Ralph still insists on learning what they are afraid of. He understands that if the beast is real he must be able to defend the group from it as he is the leader. Ralph remains to be fair and starts to say, “we’ll have a vote on them; on ghosts I mean; and then go to the shelters because we’re all tired” (90).

In the quote above, Ralph is attempting to hide when the boys pass by him. Jack however notices him and Ralph realizes this may be the end. Jack, along with his tribe and their spears and painted faces run down Ralph through the forest even setting it on fire. In the end Ralph ends up being saved by luck, running into an officer. If it were not for the officer, Jack’s evilness would have got the best of him, and Ralph would not have survived.
“They hate you, Ralph. They’re going to do you. They’re going to hunt you tomorrow.” (Golding, 170). After all the chaos from previous chapters of the novel, Ralph realizes that he’s completely isolated and lonely.
The context of this quote is when Jack wants to go hunt the beastie and Ralph is timid to go, because they believe that the ferocious, wild creature quite possibly exists. Jack asks if Ralph is frightened in a way that makes he himself look confident that the spears merely made of wood will be capable of protecting them. Ralph admits to being scared and they end up going on this hunt. Although the “beastie” is only a mental scare, Jack still is a completely different person when he assumes the role of the hunter.
Since the beginning of the book Ralph and Jack were having some tension over who became leader, but later Jack took it way too far.
