The lecturer argues that the state per capita income has been growing apart due to social issues occurring. The “Growing Apart” statistical chart showed that the districts of California are slowly but surely differentiating from income. San Joaquin Valley was the district with the lowest income as of 2009 because they have a higher population dealing with social issues such as teen pregnancy, obesity, and poverty. These issues are not well addressed and there are not many resources to intervene with these issues, so the population just suffer. With the population of the San Joaquin Valley suffering from these issues, the income of that district is slowly falling because there are less people attempting to obtain an education. Growing Apart statistical chart strongly showed that there is a tremendous gap between the districts in California, and San Joaquin Valley is the lowest of the districts. San Joaquin Valley suffers from limited health care providers, facilities, and grocery stores. With limited resources, the population will slowly but surely increase the adverse effects of social issues resulting in many chronic diseases among the population. With chronic diseases increasing, people are slowly falling into poverty because they need income to pay for their medications. “Merced’s Kids Are Not All Right” explains the disconnected youth within the city of Merced. Disconnected youth are people from ages 16-19 that are not working nor going to school. The summer time in Merced is the worst because to go to recreations and summer school require money while swimming pools are closed down. The unemployment rate is high among disconnected youth, so it leaves them with nothing to do. All they do is smoke pot and have unnecessary sexual activity, which increases social issues and lowers income rate of the population. If Merced continues as it is, then they will be no future generations to make a good change to the community.
