Current Event 2: Sandy Hook Elementary School Case Update Gun control has been a major issue in society lately. The school shooting that took place in Florida is not the only tragedy that American has seen in terms of mass shootings. There was the shooting in Las Vegas, Orlando night club, Sandy Hook elementary school, and Sutherland Springs church. These are just a few of the mass shootings that took place in the United States. However, I want to focus on the shooting that took place at the Sandy Hook elementary school. The suspect in the case is Nikolas Cruz who is 19 years old. The Florida prosecutor for the case said that he was seeking the death penalty. Nikolas Cruz is accused of killing 17 people in the school. Cruz’s lawyer wants to portray him as mentally distressed, hoping to convince the jury that the death penalty is not the right choice. The prosecutor says that there are seven factors that can make Nikolas Cruz eligible for the death penalty. Some of those factors include the fact that Mr. Cruz purposely caused many deaths. He also says that the capital felony was “especially heinous, atrocious or cruel” (Alan Blinder). According to the article, Cruz stood quiet rather than debate his guilt. In Florida, standing mute means not to plead guilty. Nikolas Cruz’s lawyer does not want him to plead guilty while the death penalty is still an option. Nikolas Cruz has been charged with 34 counts; 17 counts are for premeditated murder in the first degree and 17 counts are for the attempted murder in the first degree.
