Sarah and Angelina Grimke The Civil Rights Movement gave freedom and rights to the African Americans who were being denied them. During this time period there were many people who greatly impacted this movement. Two of those people were Sarah and Angelina Grimke. The two sisters played a very important role in the Civil Rights Movement by campaigning for the abolition of slavery . Together, Sarah and Angelina Grimke inspired people all around the nation to join the North in abolishing slavery by publishing powerful pieces of writing and delivering eloquent speeches which included personal stories of their experiences with slavery from their childhood. They were able to share their first hand accounts of slavery to Northerners and support their ideas and belief that slavery should be abolished with their personal experiences. These two sisters used their speeches and writings to attract the attention of thousands nationwide and help to fuel the anti-slavery movement (Blundell). They became role models to other southerners in the fact that their families had been slave holders but they broke out of this stereotype and began to fight for the North for the abolishment of slavery (Blundell). Sarah and Angelina also greatly impacted women's rights and involvement in today's society. Angelina made history when she spoke in front of the Massachusetts legislative body and became the first woman to speak in front of any United states legislative body (People & Ideas). By calling on other women to join the movement and addressing a mixed gender audience Angelina and Sarah Grimke were also able to set new standards for women's involvement in the United States and help to break down the barrier between men and women. (People & Ideas). The two sisters were also the first women to work for the American Anti-slavery Society (Berkin). Sarah and Angelina were able to see their main goal be accomplished when Slavery ended. They both did so much to help to the cause and spread the ideas of the movement through their many writings and speeches
