Sarah Parker Remond Do you like giving speeches? I know I don't. But Sarah Parker Remond got her name out there by giving public speeches, speaking on different topics such as women's rights, racism, slavery, and abolition rights. I chose Sarah because she was very true to being an abolitionist and kept her worth strong while speaking on sensitive topics because she needed a change. Born into a free black family in Salem, Massachusetts in 1826, she was one of 9 children to some economically successful parents. They were abolitionists, meaning they wanted to abolish slavery and make it go away because slavery was racist and very wrong. She wanted to make it equal for women and men of color to have the same rights and be freed from being enslaved. Black Past says that she started giving speeches at just 16 years old and traveled all around giving them, eventually making her way to Europe where she then moved to Italy to become a Physician. The University of London adds that because her brother Charles Lenox Remond was one of the first black lecturers for the Anti-Slavery Society, it really inspired Sarah to do the same but making it big. Following in her brother's footsteps. Another person who really encouraged Sarah to become a lecturer was one of her friends Abby Kelly Foster. History of American Woman says that Sarah wrote in a letter to Abby that ¨I feel almost sure,¨ ¨I never should have made the attempt but for the words of encouragement I received from you. Although my heart was in the work, I felt that I was in need of a good English education.¨ Sarah faced challenges as well, especially for being a woman of color. She always had a lot of racism and discrimination coming towards her. History of American Woman releases that in May of 1856, Sarah attended an Opera, but when she refused to sit in the segregated section of seats, she not only got kicked out of the Boston Theater but also got pushed down a flight of stairs and suffered an injury. Suing the managers and winning her suit, Sarah ended up taking the city of Boston to court because of this
