Islamic Terrorism: A Fallacy
Terrorism, defined as “the unlawful use of force and violence”, is misconceived as a part of Islam in today’s society. Contrary to the widespread belief that all Muslims have to be terrorists, the act of terrorism is not affiliated with the religion in any coherent way. This blunder can mainly be attributed to the formation of multiple groups born out of hatred, that use the cover of religion as a justification for the gruesome violence that they carry out.
To many people, a man walking down the street with a beard and relatively dark skin would signify a terrorist. It wasn’t long ago when it was believed that every black man was a slave, and that same mindset can be seen today, where every Muslim is seen as a terrorist. While traveling to Australia, I was stopped abruptly at one of the security checks, right after a line of a people had passed through with no trouble at all. When it was my turn to walk through the security scanner’s, I was shocked as the man pulled me over to the side, made me take off my shoes, and even used swabs to detect whether there were any explosive materials in my bag. I didn’t think too much of it, since it was their job to check people, but my father was put through the same process unlike the others in the line. This judgement was clearly based off the fact that we were both one of the few people with beards in the entire flight. Since we were Muslims, we were the target of suspicion of being terrorists, just because of the false image and information that is among the falsehood in the world today. Instead of feeling anger against that discrimination, I felt remorse that these actions were deemed necessary because of what non-Muslims have been led to believe by the terrorists and misguided
