Where would our country be without the contributions of immigrants? Let me tell you, I doubt our country would even exist without immigrants leading the way, dating all the way back to the pilgrims who colonized Plymouth, Massachusetts in 1620. Immigration is one of the cornerstones of this great nation. In fact, almost all of us are descendants of immigrants. Even those who believe immigration is a burden to our country once had ancestors who sailed across the ocean just to live out the American Dream. My father and mother immigrated to America, just to live out the American Dream. Immigrants are being rejected, and one of the reasons is because they are supposedly hurting our economy. This economic argument is blatantly false, however. According to The New Republic, immigrants have small but positive effects on our economy. Statistics show that the wages of American workers will increase in the future if the current immigration flow keeps up. Statistically, immigrants are almost twice as likely to start up businesses as native workers, which can provide job opportunities for middle class Americans and even other immigrants. Immigrants keep entire industries alive just by taking up jobs that nobody desires. I believe that, as civil people, we should welcome immigrants into this great country with open arms. We should allow them to prosper, succeed, and live out the American Dream, just as our ancestors, or even ourselves, came over to do. Instead of demonizing some of these optimistic people, I feel that we should embrace them and teach them the ethics that citizens find valuable in America. Let’s not welcome immigrants as strangers from other countries, but let’s welcome them in as brand new, optimistic Americans. And this welcoming process all starts with you, as a
