I don't know what the most important societal problem in the world is as I'm not a world traveler and haven't personally experienced issues from other countries. I can only address the biggest problem in my world and that is gun violence, particularly in our schools. The number of occurrences of mass shootings in schools has skyrocketed this last year and the trend is clearly getting worse. Our country has a long and sometimes bloody history with guns and the 2nd amendment is one of the most argued over in our Bill of Rights. I am sympathetic to the rights of law abiding gun owners whether they use the gun for personal protection or hunting, especially since it seems some want to blame this crisis unjustly on all gun owners. I propose that we alter the gun laws in this country to reflect the reality that hunters and citizens protecting their home and property do not need a gun that shoots 50 bullets in less than a minute and that the only thing those are good for is killing people. Some make the argument that the weapons might be needed to protect us from our own government as our founding fathers did over 200 years ago. The problem is the government will always have access to bigger, more powerful weapons, so that is an escalation we individuals could never win anyway. I have read that the maximum number of rounds used in a hunting rifle is seven and pistols usually hold no more than fifteen. This seems to be a good place to start. Limit purchases to guns with magazines holding fewer than twenty bullets, raise the legal age to purchase any gun to twenty one, and outlaw the purchasing of high capacity magazines to individual citizens. This step might not stop all school shootings but it would make it much harder to kill a mass of people and make it easier for the shooter to be stopped. Recently, a threat was called into my high school suggesting a shooting was to take place. The amount of anxiety and stress I felt was overwhelming and made it impossible to concentrate until the threat was announced to be
