Social networking is a mainstay within society, widely used by all, especially within the teenage demographic; however, the trend has caught fire within the younger elementary school aged children. The elementary schools are using the web and social media more than ever, with the majority of homework submitted online and the availability of progress reports through classroom media applications. The plethora of social networking applications are a valuable resource that allows the youth to connect with each other, peer groups, teachers, family and their communities; however, there are dangers lurking in the corners. Often, the children focus on the positive aspects of remaining connected to their friends and current on hallway gossip while ignoring or discounting the dangerous and negative effects. Just like anything else, moderation, responsible usage and education are paramount to successful social networking. For parents, it is a moral obligation to prepare our children to navigate the minefield of social media. Most social networking applications including Facebook and Foursquare are equipped with location indicators that appear on the sites. By allowing these reporting services to disclose the location of the child, it publicizes where there are each time they post or “check in” to a business. This is a stalker’s dream service and should be avoided at all costs. Teenagers may believe it is trendy to inform their followers of their every move; however, as parents, we understand the costs of this decision can be extreme.
