Carl Jung said, “If one does not understand a person, one tends to regard him as a fool. ” The short story “Saturday Climbing”, by WD Valgardson, explores how the protagonist, Barry, an overprotective father of a sixteen-year-old girl, struggles to let go and trust his daughter Moira. Initially, Barry faces adversity trying to communicate and understand Moira. However, after he signs himself and Moira to rock climbing, new trust starts to be created causing the ‘rope’ within their relationship to strengthen. As a result, Moira opens up to her father and he starts to understand her desire to carve out her own life. Therefore, Barry chooses to let go and allow Moira to find own path. Barry signs them up for rock climbing hoping to better his relationship with Moira. Although Moira spoke admirably about rock climbing, she doesn’t like the fact that Barry signed her up without consent. Resulting in lost trust, and arguments. To heal an “argument over her going away to college”, Moira accepted to go climb the cliff with Barry. The challenges they face climbing the cliff are a metaphor for the conflicts they face in their relationship, the cliff being a symbol of their struggles and challenges. This is evident since Barry always goes first up the cliff creating a path up and whilst Moira follows. This corresponds to real life and how Barry has been limiting Moira’s independence. Moira and Barry belaying each other is a metaphor for the trust between them. The rope holding them together is another symbol of their relationship. This is true as at the start the rope between them is slack symbolizing little trust and lots of room for conflict, whilst being tight symbolizes the new trust within them. In the end, the cliff symbolized the hardships in Barry and Moira’s relationship and the climb itself is them facing the challenges. The frizzy-haired girl says, “the caged bird proves nothing but the power of the captor.” The meaning of the quote is that Moira is the caged bird and the captor is Barry. This quote is saying that the caged bird wants to be free and live its own life. More evidence of this is when Moira says, “I’m not innocent”, showing Barry she is not the innocent girl he used to know and now has a mind of her own. Barry ends up overcoming and letting go of his restrictive nature. Proof of this is when Barry lets Moira lead the climb first, which symbolizes her starting to carve out her way to life, finally being independent. Lastly, “extreme begets extremism” this quote is saying that extreme behavior towards one thing can create extreme behaviors towards the other. Meaning that Barry holding Moira back from her independence, can and will create reckless behavior back toward Barry.
