Have you ever hurt someone you love the most? In this story “The Scarlet Ibis” by James Hurst, the main character does exactly that. The story is about a big brother and a little brother, Doodle, who have to go through things that other siblings do not normally go through. The big brother has to care for Doodle by carrying him around because of his disability, not being able to walk. And with a big responsibility like this someone might mess up. The characteristics of the big brother of being neglectful, immature, and angry in the story will help prove the theme that sometimes we hurt the ones we love the most. In the beginning of the story the big brother shows this characterization because he said that he would turn doodle over in his go kart, and that is how his little brother started to pick himself up. Although, when he would start to lift himself up and mature physically after his brother would do this was still not right. Another reason the big brother had an immature mind was that when he was training his little brother he purposely ran faster than him and when he did this his little brother would breath heavy and get red in the face. The biggest mistake the big brother did was when the storm came they had to run to the house. While the little brother ran as fast as he could he was not as fast as the big brother. When the little brother cried out for help the big brother ran faster to the house and this is when the little brother died.
