There are many factors that are responsible for the amount of auto-accidents occurring in the society and one of the factors is drunk driving, or also known as driving under the influence (DUI). It is important to be aware that drunk driving is always hazardous not only for the drivers themselves, but also for other vehicles on the road. This is because when one consumes alcoholic beverages, it decreases their concentration, they lack good judgment skills, slows their reaction time, and decreases their vision, which can result in accidents. One of the suggestions that can help the society in preventing drunk driving is that all the states should require the drivers to install ignition-interlock devices in all their registered vehicles, as some states of the United States have already implemented this action. When installed in the vehicle, this device requires a breath sample of the driver and if it detects alcohol, then it does not allow the engine of the car to start. This will help individuals who have consumed alcohol from driving. Second suggestion is that all states should make their laws and punishments for DUI stricker. For instance, on the first drunk driving offense, the driver’s license should be suspended for a varying amount of time along with charging a fine and requiring the driver to take a DUI prevention course, in person. However, if a driver is caught a second or more times for DUI, then the punishment for violation should also include imprisonment for a varying amount of time to prevent the drivers from further drinking and driving incidents. These suggestions can help reduce instances of drinking and driving in the community, which will help decrease auto-accidents due to DUI and it increases roadway safety for the drivers.
