To Amy Klobuchar, Minnesota Senator, we urge you to keep an open and compassionate mind as you read this. We also ask you to keep in mind the point of view of your fellow strong women around the great state of Minnesota, as well as the United States of America. We are writing you with the purpose of bringing the sexist nature of many school dress codes to your attention. There are many schools that still have dress codes in place where young girls’ bodies are continually sexualized and objectified. The idea that any “inappropriate” amount of skin will hinder the education and focus of boys around them is driven into the minds of young girls from the time they start expressing themselves through their clothing. It teaches them that their bodies are simply objects, and not tools for them to use to go through life achieving great things. Girls are sent home from school everyday because their outfits do not fit their school’s idea of acceptable. They are denied the ability to get an education that day for the sake of not being a “distraction.” For example, we have seen people making big deals over a girl’s bra strap showing. This. Is. Not. An. Issue. The majority of the female population needs to wear a bra for their own comfort, and it is absolutely unacceptable that teachers make big deals out of seeing something as simple as a bra strap being out. There are also schools where girls are not able to wear skirts or shorts that go above their knees. Schools have rules where you cannot show your collarbone. Spaghetti strap tops are banned in the majority of schools nationwide. And if you violate these rules, you run the risk of your educational rights being taken away from you.
