School Lunches in the United States In 1946, President Harry Truman created that National School Lunch Program to ensure lunch for all children, regardless of their ability to pay. The National School Lunch Program is a federally funded program that provides free and reduced price lunch to children in public schools and nonprofit private schools. Over This program provides lunch to over 30 million children, from low income families, daily. 95 percent of public schools participate in the National School Lunch program. The schools are reimbursed $2.93 for each meal they serve for free. If the lunch cost less than $2.93 to make, then the school can make a profit from the free lunch served. (USDA)
School lunches served , in the United States, are unhealthy, processed foods that are high in fat, sodium, and sugar. A common public school lunch, in the United States, consist of chicken nuggets, cheeseburger, pizza, cheese rotini, mozzarella sticks, and french fries. When you look up school lunches, they are similar to the aforementioned precooked items such as cheeseburgers, french fries, chicken nuggets, etc. It is difficult to find picture of healthy school lunches because they are a rare in schools. However, when you go on governmental websites about school lunches, they have images of healthy lunches that misrepresent the actual lunches that are served in schools. Government sources are some of the only places online that these images can be found. This misrepresentation creates a level of mistrust between the government and citizens. Also, it creates a falsehood that may lead parents to believe that their children are eating healthy lunches. These pictures can be in Appendix
