The video Science and the Swastika: The deadly Experiment was about the experimentation in Germany during World War II. This video was showing how the gas chambers started when Hitler executed disabled citizen. Hitler stated that the disabled were suffering and had no use in society. Once the gas chambers were shut down in August 1941, Hitler moved experimentation to the concentration camps. They experimented on women to sterilize them and test how to make the perfect race, called the Aryan race. The Aryan race consisted blonde hair, blue eyes, and fair skin. The researchers were more of the observers of the experiments. The nurses were the ones who watched over participants. They were also the ones that did the euthanasia in the disability schools (David DM, 2013). I feel that the nurses were just following orders, but I feel that they had a big role in the experimentation. They were watching over patients while they were being killed, cut open, and tortured. Nurses are supposed to be patient advocates. The nurses should have stood up for the rights of their patients. Even though nurses had a big role in the experimentation, I also feel that it wasn’t all on them. I feel that nurses weren’t seen as important in this time period. So, the nurses knew that if they spoke up against a researcher they risked getting in trouble or being killed. This video influenced my future role as a nurse researchers. I definitely would like to be part of the research field someday, even if it is just helping a researcher. This video showed me exactly what unethical research is. Unethical researcher is when participants are misled or deceived about the experiment, when the participants are hurt or killed, and when consent is not taken. This video influenced me to encourage others and myself to be a good patient
