Back in the 1800’s being a women was tough. The women’s job was thought of to be just taking care of the kids and assisting her husband with anything he needed. In the novel Invention of Wings by Sue Monk Kidd the two main topics are slavery and women’s rights. Sarah and Handful are two main characters from this novel and are affected most by the actions of other’s during this time. Sarah and Handful are very different but also have many of the same qualities.

Treated unfairly, beaten and put down slaves, had no rights in the novel The Invention of Wings. Sue Monk Kidd explained abolition at its greatest point of effectiveness. Abolitionists despised slavery and did everything in their power to abolish it. It took courage to be an abolitionist because an abolitionist had to take the harder path and stand up to the people who opposed ending slavery. In the novel the characters face hardship, sorrow and loss, but it is through their ability to be courageous that helps them learn best what they must do to survive.
In Neil Shubin’s book Your Inner Fish the genetic blueprint of human life, and all animal life, is revealed. The book’s main message is that everything, every feature humans or any other animal can have, is part of the same genetic history. The features and mechanisms that make up our bodies have evolved through “descent with modification” over time. Slight changes to cells, bones, and genes have all culminated into new species that while different still carry reminders of their evolutionary past. When most learn of evolution they learn humans and primates evolved from a common ancestor, and they stop there, they do not look any further.
Over the eras, many scientists have expressed concerns with Darwin's evolution theory and in "Was Darwin Wrong?" by David Quammen one can learn about the proof behind the theory of evolution. Many people do not believe in evolution due to an overall unawareness about the theory and religious upbringing. However, Quammen clarifies the truth behind evolution in his article. The article states five positions of evidence biogeography, embryology, morphology, paleontology, and the bacterial resistance to antibiotics discovered in humans.
In addition, scientists use the homologous structure as evidence for evolution by using structures with different appearances and functions that derived from the same body parts in a common ancestor. Furthermore, natural selection is evidence for evolution because for example, when Darwin collected birds they were a closely related group of distinct species, but the different beak shapes were related to food gathering. Artificial selection is another piece of evidence for evolution in which operates by favoring individuals with certain phenotypic traits allowing them to reproduce and pass their genes to the next generation. Overall many biologists accepted Darwin’s theories but there are some objections such as how evolution is not demonstrated, no fossil intermediates, the intelligent design argument, evolution violating the second law of thermodynamics, proteins are too improbable, the irreducible complexity argument, and how natural selection does not imply
When Darwin went on the HMS beagle he had went all around the world gathering species to study. When he had got to the Galapagos island he had discovered the finches and as he researched them he found that this species has changed over a long period of time. Darwin had found that the finches were related to each other in the structure of their beaks, short tails, form of body and plumage. The common ancestor of the Large Ground finch was the Blue-Black grassquit. All the galapagos finches have evolved from this bird.
Natural selection is a force of nature that is a catalyst to forever changing variations in species of plants and animals. Pertaining to the article, "Darwin and Natural Selection" by Dr. Dennis O'Neil, the Galapagos Islands helped Darwin to understand the idea of evolution. Darwin identified thirteen different species of finches that differ from beak size and shape. The term used for this variation today is called adaptive radiation; where different populations of the same species develop different characteristics due to contrasting environments. Moreover, Darwin realized the beak varieties were apparent to the differing diets of each population of finches.

A study published in 2015 on these Island Scrub-Jays (Aphelocoma insularis) demonstrates examples of natural selection.
