The Scientific Method Contrary to popular belief, we don’t necessarily need to be scientists to make use of the Scientific Method. We utilize this method throughout everyday life. The Scientific Method is the principles and procedures for the systematic pursuit of knowledge involving the recognition and formulation of a problem, the collection of data through observation and experiment, and the formulation of testing a hypothesis [Merriam-Webster]. There are five key components to the Scientific Method: making an observation, forming a question, forming a hypothesis, organizing an experiment, and drawing a conclusion. One in particular, the Mystery of the Miami Circle. In late 1998, an old 1950’s apartment complex was bought and demolished in attempts to rebuild a 40-story condominium in Miami, Florida. Succeeding the demolishment of the apartment complex, archaeologists discovered a wide range of holes formed perfectly into a circle. There were a numerous amount of different theories of how these holes were mysteriously placed in a perfect circle. But as the Scientific Method states, one theory will always lead to another, causing one theory to prove another wrong. The original theory of the Miami Circle was that these holes may have been created some two thousand years ago by the Tequesta Indians that some believed was their capital. This theory caused the state of Florida to purchase this piece of land from the entrepreneur for twenty-seven million dollars for further investigation. Further observations from a Florida University led archaeologist to believe that the circle may have been a result of sewer linage from a septic tank from the old 1950’s apartment complex. Other theories claimed the circle to be an ancient astronomical device. As you can see, one theory may lead to an endless amount of different theories. The study and investigation regarding one theory of how the Miami Circle was created will ultimately lead to more questions and ideas of how it was actually formed, thus making a theory not “just a theory” as one question or idea can lead to
