One video game element of the movie involves Scott leveling up or unlocking an achievement in the video gaming environment, which represents him actually growing up and leaving a part of his immature self behind. As the plot unfolds, Scott falls for Ramona. Scott is forced to break up with teen-aged Knives and fight Ramona’s seven exes to win his adult love. All of these fights represent video games like Street Fighter, Zelda, Super Mario, or Guitar Hero. During the fights with the exes, the film uses non-diegetic cartoons to show Ramona’s past immature life. Ramona has moved into the adult world, past the immaturity of her youth. The cartoon graphics during the fights also highlight the cartoon nature of Scott’s immature world as he face the obstacles in his adult relationship with Ramona. The exes represent Ramon’s past demons and problems, and Scott failures in the adult world. He must defeat these failures to finally grow up to win his lady love. By defeating each demon, it forces Ramona to see Scott as a grown up and allows Scott to see himself as successful and changing.
During the final battle, Scott loses and dies when he achieves burning love. His immature love was not enough to save him. However when he is resurrected in the game and finally achieves self-respect, he wins the final battle and gets the adult girl. In the end Gideon says Scott had to fight himself. Scott faces himself and decides if he wanted to be an adult or continue to be an immature kid. He makes peace with himself and chooses to leave the video gaming world, and enter the door to the real world with his adult
