This hints the reader of some connection between the owl and Ultima from their protective natures, especially for Antonio. Antonio rushes to Ultima and discovers her in her dying throes, she says, “When I was a child… I was taught my life's work by a wise old man, a good man. In the chapter 15 of the novel, Where the Red Fern Grows by Wilson Rawls, Billy has a superstition that it is bad luck if he hears more than one screech owl at on the same night. This superstition seems odd to me because I have never heard of it before and I don’t have experience with screech owls. However, superstitions are a part of every culture.
